Miguel Andresen de Sousa Tavares is a Portuguese lawyer, journalist, and writer. Born in Porto on June 25, 1952, he is the son of poet Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen and lawyer and politician Francisco Sousa Tavares. He pursued an education in Law and later became known for his work in journalism and essay writing.
His literary debut, Equador, which is based on the life of a Portuguese governor of São Tomé e Príncipe, became one of the best-selling books in Portugal in 2003, with over 220,000 copies sold. He has also authored popular children's books.
Miguel writes a weekly political commentary column for Expresso and contributes to the sports newspaper A Bola. He is known for his passion for football and is a keen supporter of FC Porto. Politically, he is generally seen as a centrist.
In 1978, he made his television debut by joining Radiotelevisão Portuguesa. In 1989, he helped create the magazine Grande Reportagem and became its director in 1990, a position he held for ten years. He also published chronicles and wrote for the journal Público from 1990 until 2002.
