Hermine "Miep" Gies was an Austrian-born Dutch citizen who played a significant role during World War II by helping to hide Anne Frank, her family (Otto, Margot, Edith), and four other Dutch Jews (Fritz Pfeffer, Hermann van Pels, Auguste van Pels, Peter van Pels) from the Nazis. This hiding took place in an annex above Otto Frank's business premises.
Born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, on 15 February 1909, Gies was brought to the Netherlands in 1920 as a foster child due to her frail health. She grew very attached to her Dutch foster family and chose to stay in the Netherlands for the rest of her life.
In 1933, Gies began working for Otto Frank, becoming a trusted friend and a crucial support to the Frank family during their twenty-five months in hiding. After the family was arrested, Gies, along with her colleague Bep Voskuijl, preserved Anne Frank's diary, ensuring its safety until it could be returned to Otto Frank in 1945. Otto later compiled the diary into a book, first published in 1947.
Gies documented her experiences in the book Anne Frank Remembered: The Story of the Woman Who Helped to Hide the Frank Family, co-authored with Alison Leslie Gold in 1987. Miep Gies passed away in 2010 at the age of 100.
