Oscar Meredith Weatherby was an influential American publisher born on February 25, 1915. He is best known as the founder of Weatherhill Publications. Weatherby spent a significant portion of his life in Japan, where he became renowned for his English translations of literary works by the acclaimed author Yukio Mishima.
Weatherby was not only a publisher but also an actor. He appeared in the 1970 war movie Tora! Tora! Tora!, portraying the U.S. Ambassador to Japan, Joseph Grew.
He was a native of Waco, Texas, and passed away on June 27, 1997, in La Jolla, California. Weatherby was also known for being a long-term patron and romantic partner of the photographer Tamotsu Yato.
