Matthew J. Kirby was born in Utah in 1976 and is an acclaimed American author known for his middle grade and young adult children's books. Having grown up in diverse places such as Maryland, California, and Hawaii, Kirby developed a broad perspective that enriches his writing.

He pursued an undergraduate degree in history and later obtained an M.S. in school psychology.
