Maira Kalman

Maira Kalman is an American artist, illustrator, writer, and designer renowned for her insightful explorations of the human condition through her artwork and literature. Born in Tel Aviv, she moved to New York at the age of four and has since become a prominent figure in the art world, contributing regularly to The New York Times and The New Yorker.

Kalman is the author and illustrator of over 30 books catering to both adults and children. Her works are celebrated globally and exhibited in various museums. Among her well-known children's books are Ooh-la-la- Max in Love, What Pete Ate, and Swami on Rye.

In addition to books, Kalman is recognized for her collaboration with Rick Meyerowitz on the iconic NewYorkistan cover for The New Yorker in 2001. Her creative endeavors include illustrating The Elements of Style and an online column titled Principles of Uncertainty for The New York Times.

Currently residing in New York, Kalman is known for her daily walks, which often inspire her artistic narratives reflecting life's absurdities.
