Kay was born in California on an air force base, as her father was stationed there at the time. Shortly after her birth, her family moved back to North Carolina, where she was raised and educated. She is the eldest of three children, with a brother two years her junior and a sister seven years younger.
Her father and brother are both builders and have established a reputable construction company, while her mother, who passed away in March 2002, worked in personnel management before becoming Kay's personal assistant.
