She currently resides in West Virginia with her husband, Scott McClanahan, who is also a writer and martial artist.

Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing from the University of California in Riverside and a Master of Fine Arts in Fiction Writing from Brooklyn College. As an educator, she has been imparting knowledge at a community college in West Virginia.
