Julie Orringer

Julie Orringer is an American novelist, short story writer, and professor born on June 12, 1973, in Miami, Florida. She is renowned for her evocative storytelling and has penned several award-winning books. Orringer's educational journey took her through Cornell University and the Iowa Writer's Workshop, and she was a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University.


Her debut collection, How to Breathe Underwater, was published in September 2003. She followed this with the critically acclaimed The Invisible Bridge, a New York Times bestseller. Her novel, The Flight Portfolio, explores the life of Varian Fry, a journalist who saved blacklisted writers and artists during World War II, a story that inspired the Netflix series Transatlantic.


Orringer's stories have graced esteemed publications such as The Paris Review, McSweeney's, and Ploughshares. Her work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Paris Review's Discovery Prize and two Pushcart Prizes. She has also received fellowships from prestigious institutions like the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.


She currently resides in Brooklyn with her husband, fellow writer Ryan Harty, and their children. Julie Orringer continues to contribute significantly to contemporary literature, with her books being translated into twenty languages.
