Julie Berry

Julie Berry is an acclaimed American author of children's and young adult books, known for her engaging storytelling and richly developed characters. She was born on September 3, 1974, and grew up on a 50-acre farm in Western New York as the youngest of seven children. Her childhood was filled with outdoor adventures, surrounded by nature and animals, which fostered her love for storytelling.

Julie was fortunate to grow up in a family that valued reading, with a mother who had a passion for poetry. Her early literary influences include classics like Charlotte’s Web, Anne of Green Gables, and The Secret Garden. This literary environment inspired her to dream of a future that included writing.

She attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, majoring in communication. Despite considering various career paths such as marine biology and chemistry, writing remained a constant aspiration. After college, she married Phil, with whom she has four sons.

Julie pursued her dream of writing novels after her fourth son was born, earning an M.F.A. in writing for children and young adults from Vermont College of the Fine Arts. Her first novel was published in 2009, and she has since received numerous accolades, including a 2013 Horn Book Fanfare title, School Library Journal Best of 2013, and a Kirkus Best Teen Read for 2013 for All the Truth That’s In Me.

Her subsequent novels, such as The Scandalous Sisterhood of Prickwillow Place and The Passion of Dolssa, have also earned critical acclaim and several awards. Julie Berry continues to write, captivating audiences around the world with her imaginative tales.
