Joseph O'Connor

Joseph Victor O'Connor is an Irish novelist, born on 20 September 1963. He gained international acclaim with his 2002 historical novel Star of the Sea, which became a global bestseller. Before establishing himself as a successful author, O'Connor worked as a journalist for the Sunday Tribune and Esquire. He is also a regular contributor to RTÉ and a member of the prestigious Irish artists' association Aosdána.


O'Connor has authored eighteen books across various genres, including novels, screenplays, short stories, stage plays, and non-fiction collections. Some of his notable novels include Cowboys and Indians, The Salesman, Redemption Falls, Ghost Light, The Thrill of it All, and Shadowplay. His novel Star of the Sea has been translated into 40 languages and sold over a million copies.


He has received numerous awards, including the Irish PEN Award for Outstanding Achievement in Literature, Prix Zepter for European Novel of the Year, Prix Millepages, Premio Acerbi, and an American Library Association Award. In 2014, he was appointed Frank McCourt Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Limerick.


O'Connor is also recognized for his contributions to broadcasting and collaborations with renowned musicians and artists. He has performed spoken-word pieces at major venues worldwide and engaged in projects like Heartbeat of Home, a major international dance show.
