José Antonio Cotrina is a Spanish writer, born in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, on July 8, 1972. He focuses mainly on the genres of fantasy, science fiction, and horror. He is best known for his novels set in the Between the Lines Universe and for his trilogy, The Cycle of the Red Moon.
Cotrina began his publishing career in the early 1990s, primarily with short stories. He transitioned to novels with Las fuentes perdidas, published by La Factoría de Ideas in 2003. Since then, he has directed his career towards young adult literature, with works such as La casa de la Colina Negra (Alfaguara), the trilogy El ciclo de la Luna Roja, and La canción secreta del mundo (both published by Hidra).
He has won several awards, including the UPC Award for science fiction novella for Salir de Fase and the Alberto Magno Award, which he has won three times. Cotrina blends fantasy, science fiction, and horror without shame or restraint.
