Idra Novey is a renowned American novelist, poet, and translator. Born in 1978 in Western Pennsylvania, she has become a significant figure in contemporary literature. Novey is known for her ability to compose compelling narratives and powerful poetry, having her works translated into a dozen languages.
Her novel Take What You Need was recognized as a New York Times Notable Book of 2023 and was named a Best Book of the Year by several prominent publications, including The New Yorker and The Guardian. She is also the author of earlier novels like Those Who Knew and Ways to Disappear, the latter being a finalist for the L.A. Times Book Prize for First Fiction.
Novey's poetry and fiction have been featured in prestigious outlets such as The Atlantic, The New York Times, and The Guardian. She received the Pushcart Prize in 2022 for her story "The Glacier," published in The Yale Review.
As a translator, Novey has worked on notable projects, including translating Clarice Lispector's novel The Passion According to G.H. and co-translating Iranian poet Garous Abdolmalekian's works, Lean Against This Late Hour, which was a finalist for the PEN America Poetry in Translation Prize in 2021.
