Hisham Matar (Arabic: هشام مطر) is an American born British-Libyan writer, renowned for his profound literary works. His evocative memoir, The Return, garnered significant acclaim, securing the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography as well as the 2017 PEN America Jean Stein Book Award. Matar's literary journey commenced with his debut novel In the Country of Men, which was met with great enthusiasm, earning a shortlist position for the 2006 Man Booker Prize.
Matar's compelling essays have graced the pages of prominent publications including Asharq al-Awsat, The Independent, The Guardian, The Times, and The New York Times. Following the success of his first novel, he released his second novel, Anatomy of a Disappearance, on 3 March 2011, which was also received to wide acclaim.
Aside from his writing, Matar contributes to the literary community as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. His academic pursuits see him as an Associate Professor of Professional Practice in Comparative Literature, Asia & Middle East Cultures, and English at Barnard College, Columbia University.
