Gregory Richard John Matthews is an Australian former cricketer, known for his role as a cricket all-rounder. Born on 15 December 1959, Matthews was a prominent figure in New South Wales and Australian cricket as an off-spin bowler and left-handed batsman. He was affectionately known among fans as "Mo" or "Moey."
Matthews was celebrated as "a tough, useful, determined little cricketer; a steady, flat, off-spin bowler; a staunch, correct left-hand bat; and a brilliant fielder." In the 1980s, when Australian cricket was struggling, his "dashing batsmanship" and growing skill as a spin bowler elevated him to the status of a national hero. He achieved centuries during crisis matches against New Zealand and India in 1985–86 and took ten wickets in the Tied Test at Madras. Matthews also performed admirably against England in 1986–87.
However, his career began to wane thereafter, as his "effervescent and unorthodox" style didn't quite fit with the Australian Test team's rising dominance in the 1990s. He was considered "not good enough in either of the game's main departments to make a lasting impact as a Test all-rounder," despite scoring a century against England in 1990–91. Matthews played irregularly and was eventually dropped in 1993, but continued to find success with New South Wales until his retirement in 1997.
In addition to his cricket career, Greg Matthews is an accomplished author, known for works such as "The Further Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and other novels under the pseudonym Torsten Krol.
