Emily St. John Mandel is a Canadian novelist and essayist renowned for her contribution to contemporary literature. Her body of work encompasses six novels to date, including the critically acclaimed Station Eleven (2014), The Glass Hotel (2020), and Sea of Tranquility (2022). Station Eleven not only achieved impressive global reach, being translated into 33 languages, but it also transcended the boundaries of literature by being adapted into a limited series on HBO Max. The Glass Hotel similarly garnered widespread recognition, securing its place in over twenty languages and earning a spot among Barack Obama's favorite books of 2020. In April 2022, Mandel released Sea of Tranquility, which made an impressive debut at number three on The New York Times Best Seller list.
Prior to her literary success, Mandel pursued studies in contemporary dance at the School of Toronto Dance Theatre and spent some time in Montreal. Eventually, she made her way to New York, where she established herself both as a writer and a resident. Station Eleven has been particularly celebrated, receiving nominations for a National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award. It also triumphed in the Morning News Tournament of Books and has been translated into 34 languages. Mandel currently resides in New York City with her husband and daughter.
