Elizabeth Marie Pope

Elizabeth Marie Pope was an American author and educator, born on May 1, 1917, in Washington D.C.

She was known for her specialization in Elizabethan England and the works of John Milton and William Shakespeare. Pope graduated from Bryn Mawr College and earned her Ph.D. in English Literature from Johns Hopkins University.

After completing her education, she began teaching at Mills College in Oakland, California. Over her career at Mills College, she rose from assistant professor to professor and chairman of the department, excelling as an instructor.

As an author, Pope focused mainly on Milton, Shakespeare, and Elizabethan England. Her dedication to historical research took her abroad, and this diligence was reflected in her work, particularly in her book The Perilous Guard, which was selected for the Newbery Honor Book Award in 1975.

Elizabeth Marie Pope passed away in 1992.
