David Almond is a British author known for his acclaimed novels for children and young adults. Born on 15 May 1951, Almond has been celebrated for his contributions to literature since 1998. His first children's novel, Skellig (1998), achieved critical acclaim and won prestigious awards including the Whitbread Children's Novel of the Year Award and the Carnegie Medal.
David grew up in Felling on Tyne, near Newcastle, in a home filled with both happiness and sadness, having lost a sister at a young age and his father during his teenage years. As a child, he was an altar boy and spent a lot of time in church, while also enjoying the outdoors, such as playing football and visiting local beaches.
He pursued his passion for writing after studying at the University of East Anglia and initially ventured into adult fiction before finding success in children's literature. His other notable works include Kit's Wilderness (1999), Heaven Eyes (2000), Secret Heart (2001), among others.
David Almond's work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2010, and he was honored with an OBE for services to literature. His books have been translated into numerous languages and adapted into various media formats including stage plays and films.
