Caleb Carr

Caleb Carr was an American military historian and author. He was the son of Lucien Carr, a former UPI editor and a key Beat generation figure, and Francesca Von Hartz. Carr was born in Manhattan and lived for much of his life on the Lower East Side.

He authored several notable works including The Alienist, The Angel of Darkness, Casing the Promised Land, The Lessons of Terror, Killing Time, The Devil Soldier, The Italian Secretary, and The Legend of Broken. Additionally, he wrote a memoir titled My Beloved Monster, about his relationship with Masha, his half-wild Siberian Forest Cat.

Caleb Carr previously taught military history at Bard College and worked extensively in film, television, and theater. His military and political writings appeared in numerous magazines and periodicals, among them The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal.

He attended Kenyon College and New York University, where he earned a B.A. in military and diplomatic history. He was also a contributing editor of MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History and wrote frequently on military and political affairs. Carr lived in upstate New York.
