Bree Despain is an acclaimed American author, born in 1979. She holds a master's degree in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Despain embarked on her writing career full-time following a car accident, a pivotal moment that made her realize her deepest regret would have been not completing and publishing a book.
Despain is best known for her Dark Divine trilogy and the Into The Dark trilogy. Her debut novel, The Dark Divine, was published in 2009, followed by The Lost Saint in December 2010. The series features Grace Divine, a pastor's daughter whose life changes dramatically with the return of her childhood friend, Daniel Kalbi. The Savage Grace, the final installment of the Dark Divine series, was released on March 13, 2012. Despain subsequently introduced the Into The Dark series with The Shadow Prince, a modern-day retelling of the Persephone/Hades and Orpheus/Eurydice myths. The second book, The Eternity Key, came out on April 28, 2015, and the trilogy concluded in the fall of 2016 with its third book, published by Carol Rhoda Labs Press.
In addition to her novels, Despain has a rich background in storytelling that dates back to her childhood. She began by stapling folded papers to create her own "novels" and writing stories in notebooks for her friends to read. Although she once considered a career in law, believing writing was reserved for "special people," she eventually returned to her passion for storytelling. This rediscovery came when she took a semester off from college to write and direct plays for at-risk, inner-city teens from Philadelphia and New York. Currently, Despain resides in Salt Lake City, Utah, with her husband, two young sons, and her beloved TiVo.
